I am the Children’s Program Leader here at Esquimalt United; I was brought on to build our Sunday School from the ground up, as only a year prior there were no children in our congregation.
My first connection to EUC was attending preschool on site 22 years ago. Being raised by a single father meant I grew up in after school care at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, which gave me my appreciation for childcare workers. I have many younger cousins and siblings who I have done my share of looking after, so I have a strong fondness and connection to children. As an indigenous person, it is part of my culture that we learn the most from the youngest members of our community, and I believe this to be true. Children have such a fresh perspective of the world, and they teach me as much as I teach them.
I was brought up Anglican, attending St. Martin’s and St. Columba’s before their closures in 2010. I chose to be baptised at the age of 12, so those churches would always be a part of me. We moved to the congregation of St. Peter’s & St. Paul’s Church, which is also located here in Esquimalt. Last September, Esquimalt United reached out to our Reverend Gail, asking to put a job posting on our bulletin board, which was forwarded to me. This was right at the time I began seeking employment again after recovering from an illness that had taken over my life for 18 months, and was exactly what I needed. This position has changed the course of my entire life, and has inspired me to seek out new training and education opportunities. In November I got my Standard First Aid recertified, and have been seeking out more training and education opportunities for certification so that I can do this job to the best of my ability and do right by these kids.
